Denver Youth Artists Needed for La Alma Rec Center Project

Kids and community members are invited to contribute health-themed artwork to new mural

Denver, CO — Today, Denver youth are invited to contribute designs to a new mural at La Alma Recreation Center from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Denver’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. The all-ages project aims to visually unite the established neighborhood with its newer residents and encourage healthy living for all, a key goal for the Community Active Living Coalition facilitated by Denver Environmental Health.

The project is open to all community members, with an emphasis on youth participation, and will be facilitated by local muralists and artists Tommy Nahulu and Zierra Lyons.

Each youth and community artist will contribute to a 9-inch by 12-inch canvas panel interpreting the theme of “Healthy Living.”

Nahulu and Lyons will also conduct a second community painting session on Friday, Nov. 3, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at La Alma Recreation Center to help youth and community artists craft their visions. Nahulu and Lyons will then unify the art pieces contributed by youth and community members into a complete work of art, forming four, eight-foot by four-foot panels that can be moved and repositioned throughout La Alma Recreation Center or other locations.

The mural’s official debut in December will coincide with the debut of “The Heart, The Soul,” a theatrical production by Mirror Image Arts that is based on interviews conducted with more than 45 La Alma-Lincoln Park residents.

The project is supported by Denver Environmental Health, Denver Public Health, Denver Parks and Recreation, Mirror Image Arts, MyDenver, SpeakUpSpeakOut and the PHD Youth Team.
