Recap: August 2024 Coalition Meeting

The Community Active Living Coalition gathered at the La Alma Recreation Center on August 14, 2024, with those joining online via Zoom as well. The meeting had a Safe Routes to School (SRTS) theme in honor of back to school this month. To go along with this theme and connect it back to our May meeting and Micro-Grant workshop, we featured SRTS Micro-Grant projects from our 2024 CALC Micro-Grant program.

For a Micro-Grant presentation presented directly by a Micro-Grantee, Alejandra Castañeda shared about her Micro-Grant project for Skinner Middle School Bike Corral Improvements. With the Micro-Grant she supported the school in buying new bike racks, worked with Denver Public Schools facilities team to install them, and created a "Skinner Bikes" stencil so they could be spray painted along the driveway at the school to increase bike awareness and safety. We were honored to have Alejandra share, and presented her with a CALC Community Champion award for her years of dedication to community work in Northwest Denver.

After the mini presentations on SRTS Micro-grant projects we gathered together for a street design activity, focusing on our ideal designs for a safe route to school.

Coalition members gathered around a table with a large paper with a blank street so they can draw out and place pictures to envision the safe street.

To close out the CALC meeting, the Denver Balloon Guy facilitated a team building exercise which helped us celebrate the teamwork it takes to reach safer streets for all!
